BAPA Meeting Minutes - November 5, 2014

Meeting held at Red Lobster, Milpitas, CA.

Meeting called to order at 7:10pm

 Presidents Report (David McMillan):

        Officer Nominations - 2014 BAPA officers were re-nominated for 2015.

No other officer nominations were received.  Members to vote via the BAPA website prior to the BAPA Holiday Party.  Results will be announced at the Holiday Party.

        BAPA Website - Alex Neigher is working on website, but progress is slow.  Jill Nephew and Daniel (guest) offered to assist as needed.

        Holiday Party is Saturday, December 6th 2014.  Two options are being considered.  David McMillan will investigate both options and make decision next week.(Since the meeting, the location has been selected and a notification was sent)

        BAPA Logo - Jakob Uszkoreit posted some preliminary logos on the bag list.  It was agreed that we would work with Jakob’s logo to use for a current design.

        Mountain Hardwear Employee Store - BAPA members have access to the Mountain Hardwear Employee Store in Richmond, CA.  Please make use of this privilege so that we don’t lose it in the future!  BAPA members are listed at the store counter and you must be on the list for access.

        Keeping new pilots flying - we mentioned that USHPA has stated that many new P2 pilots give up the sport each year.  We as a club need to do our best to mentor new pilots and keep them engaged.  This is best done at our local level.  It was suggested that we engage the local instructors to encourage their students to become involved in BAPA and the local flying community.  BAPA is here to help and mentor new pilots!

Vice President’s Report (Susan Kent)

        Need to review our current Bylaws and post on the BAPA website.

Activities Director’s Report (Will Whitaker):

        Dunlap Fly-in in August, BAPA Picnic in September, Monster Mash end of October was excellent with a good turnout!

Regional Director’s Report (Josh Cohn, Jug Aggarwal):

        Possible revision of T3 ratings being discussed at the USHPA level

New Business: 

        Blue Rock Weather Station - Joel McMinn will install a new weather station at the top of Blue Rock in Vallejo.  Joel has received numerous donations but is short of the budget.  It was motioned that BAPA provide up to $300 to cover the budget shortage.  The motion passed.

        Josh Cohn discussed support of the US Paragliding and X-Alps Team.  The US teams have a goal of $46,000 to raise for the 2015 season.  It was motioned that BAPA donate $500 to the US teams for 2015.  The motion passed.

        MissionPeak - It was mentioned that the local rangers will be enforcing the trail regulations at MissionPeak.  This means no shortcuts (which cause erosion of the trails) and staying on the marked trails at all times.  Paragliders have been respectful of this in the past and we will continue to do so in the future.

        G-Force Machine - Jug Aggarwal discussed the G-Force Machine, which is sitting dormant in Central California.  Jug would like to transport up to the Bay Area and install in a semi-permanent location in the SouthBay.  Two locations are being considered.  It was motioned that BAPA donate up to $300 to transport and install the machine locally.  A work party will most likely be needed to install the machine this winter.

        Jug Aggarwal would like to conduct a tree self-rescue clinic this winter.

        Jug Aggarwal also discussed the Sprint League from 2014 and plans for the future in 2015.  Jug has sent out a survey to all the Sprint participants and it would be most helpful for everyone to respond to the survey to develop the 2015 Sprint League future.

Ed Levin Picnic and Spot Landing Contest

Ed Levin Fly-in, Picnic, Social, and Spot Landing Contest
Come join the fun on Saturday, September 27th at Ed Levin!!!  BAPA is sponsoring a fly-in, picnic, and social at Ed Levin on Saturday, September 27th. Students, new P2s and P3s are especially encouraged to attend and come meet other newer pilots.  Although sponsored by BAPA, you DO NOT have to be a BAPA member to attend. You DO have to have a signed WOR waiver and have your current WOR sticker to fly there. Otherwise just come for the picnic and social.
There will also be a spot landing contest and observers available for anyone who wants to try to get spots for their licenses.
Here are the details:
When:  Saturday, September 27th, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm flying. Picnic starts at 12:30 pm.
Where: Ed Levin County Park. Picnic Tables
What: Fly-in, Picnic, Spot landing contest, Observed Spots for licenses.
Spot Landing Contest: Lowest distance of 3 flights.  Landings must be controlled. Crashing, skidding, butt landings, are not counted. You must land on your feet, but stumbling may be allowed according to the judges discretion. Prizes will be awarded.
Who:  All pilots, family, spouses, significant others, and well behaved kids are welcome. Newer P2s and P3s are especially welcome and encouraged to come meet each other no matter who you had for an instructor. Instructors are welcome.  Bring the whole family and have a good time. 
Why:  Meet other pilots and hang out and have a good time.
Food:  BAPA will provide sandwich fixings, sodas, and water.  Please bring a side dish such as salads, cheese and crackers, and desserts.

July 23, 2014 BAPA Meeting Minutes.

Due to summer activities, the meeting was exceptionally held at the end of the month at  Red Lobster Restaurant in Milpitas.

The meeting was called to order at 7:13 p.m.

In attendance were 11 paraglider pilots including Julie Spiegler, Bay Area Pilot and Project Manager at the USHPA, and today’s Guest of Honor: Mike Pekin from Sand City.

The meeting was presided over by President Dave McMillan.


Guest of Honor: Mike Pekin talks about Sand City

During his presentation, Mike drawn the landscape, recalled the past and pictured the future of Sand City.

In short, the key points to remember:

  • Sand City is now a private land owned by a Real Estate Developer.
  • Paragliding is still possible following few mandatory rules.
  • The most significant of them are
    •  To be a certified USHPA pilot with available evidence.
    • Before flying, contact, introduce yourself and get the approval of the Security Guard.
  • A BAPA Committee will be created in order to explore and improve the co-existence between pilots and property owners, and investigate if the site needs/can be insured.

  • Mussel Rock. An USHPA banned HG pilot seen at Mussel Rock

Will W – Activities  Director

  • The Hat Creek and Potato Hill fly-ins had good turnouts.
  •  New events in preparation: Fly-in at Potato Hill at end of September, and Ed Levin Picnic in September.
  • Several BAPA women pilots did very well at the Rat Race:
    • Susan first, Mayumi 2nd and Julie 3rd in their various categories.


The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.


The entertainment part of the meeting was presentations and comments of pictures taken by several persons during various recent national competitions.

Hat Creek Fly-In, July 3-6 2014



The BAPA Hat Creek Fly-in will be Thursday, July 3 through Sunday, July 6, 2014.  Hat Creek Rim is located approximately 5 hours northeast of the Bay Area in the Lassen National Forest near Burney, CA.  Hat Creek is famous for its evening glass-off with consistent conditions for most of the summer.  Mid-day conditions at Hat Creek are usually too turbulent for paragliders so most pilots fly only in the evenings.  During the day there are plenty of activities in the area (including close proximity to Lassen National Park) so this fly-in is ideally suited for bringing your significant other.


Hat Creek Rim is located in the Lassen National Forest. A P3 rating is required and pilots should be comfortable launching in strong winds and flying in turbulence if they do not fly late; P2 pilots can fly if they are supervised at all times by an experienced Rim pilot/mentor.  The official Hat Creek Rim site is: http://hatcreek.infoMore information on flying at Hat Creek can be found at: 


We will be camping at Hat Creek Hereford Ranch Campground (  This campground has full facilities and is a short distance to the LZ.  If you are interested in attending the fly-in please let me know as soon as you can.  


BAPA has reserved some tent camping sites for Thursday thru Saturday nights (people arriving Wednesday need to make their own arrangements) so we would like to get a head count fairly soon. I have tentatively reserved sites 39, 40, 41, 32, 46, and 47, and some other sites nearby are available with full hookups for those needing the amenities.  The site has a map where you can check out the proximity of other sites. 


We will probably do some kind of potluck dinner Friday and/or Saturday evening after flying.

I'll need a firm head count by Tuesday, June 25 to confirm our camping sites.  After this, we will accommodate you if we can but there will be no guarantees of space at the campground.
