Bi-Monthly Meeting - Milpitas - July 13th

Hello BAPA Members and Bay Area Pilots,
This is a notice for the upcoming bi-monthly BAPA meeting on Wednesday, July 13th, at the Red Lobster in Milpitas, CA. The meeting is open to both members and non-members of BAPA. We will begin with a social hour at 6:30pm, then proceed to our normal meeting. Following the meeting, we will have a speech from Marco Pontil about an initiative to provide tandem paragliding experiences to communities of folks with disabilities or cancer. The initiative stems from a desire to give back to communities which might have received funds which were diverted to address the insurance situation with USHPA last/this year. If you're interested in learning what this initiative is about, or ways in which you might be able to help out, this is a great opportunity to get involved!
As per usual, I recommend attending this meeting to find out what's going on with our great community here in the Bay area and to meet up with other local pilots. For those who are unable to make the journey, we have a live stream available for viewing. I will post the link in an email next week.
Schedule is as follows:
6:30 pm - Social Hour begins
7:30 pm - Official Meeting begins
Immediately following the meeting – Discussion by Marco Pontil
Red Lobster
503 E Calaveras Blvd
Milpitas, CA 95035

BAPA - Hat Creek Fly-In Jul 15th - 17th

Hey Pilots,

BAPA will be hosting a fly-in at hat creek Friday July 15th through Sunday July 17th. Hat Creek Rim is located approximately 5 hours northeast of the Bay Area in the Lassen National Forest near Burney, CA. Hat Creek is famous for its evening glass-off with consistent conditions for most of the summer. Mid-day conditions at Hat Creek are usually too turbulent for paragliders so most pilots fly only in the evenings. During the day there are plenty of activities in the area (including close proximity to Lassen National Park) so this fly-in is ideally suited for bringing your non-pilot friends / significant other.

Hat Creek Rim is an unregulated site located in the Lassen National Forest. Because the site is unregulated, there are no specific pilot requirements to fly the site, however pilots should be comfortable launching in strong winds and flying in turbulence. A P3 rating is recommended, but not mandatory. More information on flying at Hat Creek can be found at:http://www.flyzephyr.com/hat-creek-rim.html

We will be camping at Hat Creek Hereford Ranch Campground (http://www.hatcreekherefordrv.com/). This campground has full facilities and is a short distance to the LZ. If you are interested in attending the fly-in please let me know as soon as you can.

BAPA has reserved some tent camping sites for Friday and Saturday nights. I have tentatively reserved sites 71, 75, 78, 79, and 80, A map of the sites can be found at: http://www.hatcreekherefordrv.com/campground-map.html I will be making adjustments to the campsites based on expected headcount, so the sooner you can let me know if you can come, the better. Best way is to confirm attendance on Facebook, but you can also contact me directly.

It looks like the volunteer fire department will be holding a craft fair and BBQ on Saturday July 16th (more info: http://tinyurl.com/jamsd3k). Let's plan on having a potluck on Saturday night. For those who would like to coordinate on food items: http://tinyurl.com/hmzbtlt

I look forward to seeing you all at Hat Creek over the 16th!

Next BAPA Meeting - Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 in Redwood City - 6:30pm

BAPA members and Bay Area pilots,

Our next meeting is on Wednesday May 11th and is open to everyone. We will begin with a social hour at 6:30pm and then transition to our normal meeting at 7:30pm. Once the meeting has been concluded, we will have a presentation by Mitch Shipley about the RRG followed by an open discussion.

The location for our meeting will be different this time; we will be hosting the event at the offices of Box in Redwood City. The meeting room quite spacious and is equipped with a full A/V system; it is located in the building to the right when facing the parking garage entrance (there will be a sign on the building to indicate where to go). The office is easily accessible by car via US-101 and more distantly I-280. Please note that there is a PAID parking garage at this location, but there may be some free street parking nearby. For those who would prefer to use public transit, or for whom public transit is better, this location also has the advantage of being directly off of the Redwood City Caltrain stop.

If you'd like to grab food for the social hour, there are a variety of restaurants nearby where grab-and-go food can be bought, including, but not limited to: Chipotle, Green Leaf (Asian fusion), and Pizza My Heart. BAPA will provide a small selection of beer and wine for the event and there are a number of stores nearby which carry a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

If for any reason you cannot make it to this location, but would still like to attend, we will be providing a live stream link (link TBA). As always, I highly recommend joining us, as this is a great way to find out what's going on in the flying community and a great opportunity to network with fellow pilots!

See y'all then!

Late Spring Fly-In @ Potato Hill - Jun 4-5th

It's time for another fly-in!
BAPA will be hosting a late-spring fly-in at Potato Hill on the weekend of 6/4-6/5. We will be camping at Dixie Glade campground (map link below). The site is a bit primitive; there is an outhouse and firepits, but NO WATER. Camping fee is $5/night. The forecast has temperatures at Dixie Glade in the mid-90s during the day and low-60s at night. Please be sure to bring enough water.
New pilots, and pilots who haven't been to Potato before: let's plan on meeting in the LZ at 9:00am Saturday morning; everyone else: let's plan on meeting in the LZ at 9:30am on both Saturday and Sunday morning. It would be awesome if some(one) could volunteer to help with driving/retrieves.I'm linking a document to track food items and volunteers if anyone is interested:
Please note that cell reception gets pretty spotty once you leave the I5. I'll be keeping my radio handy (147.405). Also, the nearest store (that I'm aware of) is about 40 minutes away from Dixie Glade in Stonyford the way to Dixie Glade (the Stonyford General Store).

LZ: https://goo.gl/maps/yQC1V5s21iM2
If you have not been to Potato Hill before please visit this link to get more information:
Potato Hill is informally regulated by BAPA and Sonoma Wings and although there are no rating requirements please be aware that it is a (usually) lee side mountain thermal site with an LZ that often has thermic, turbulent air (it's poppy!). If you have little to no mountain experience Potato can be a good place to build your skills but you should plan to fly early in the day and/or in the evening if conditions allow.
Feel free to reach out to me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Can't wait to see y'all out there!

Earth Day Cleanup @ Mussel Rock - Saturday April 23rd 9-11am

BAPA members and Bay Area pilots,

The Pacifica Beach Coalition will be holding it's 12th annual Earth Day cleanups on Saturday April 23rd from 9-11am (following this is their EcoFest event at Linda Mar Beach). Historically BAPA has participated by helping out at the Mussel Rock site cleanup. In volunteering our time, we not only ensure that Mussel Rock continues to be a clean and beautiful site to enjoy, we strengthen our relationship with the community of Pacifica.
The areas which the cleanup will focus on will be: streets, bluffs, parking lot, park, and beach (tide permitting). We are encouraged to bring gloves and buckets to help with the cleanup, however, the Pacifica Beach Coalition will likely have extras available. Meeting location is near the park entrance gate at the Mussel Rock parking lot (location information given below).
I really encourage everyone to come out and be a part of this Earth Day cleanup! The number of flying days at the coast are increasing as we enter the good flying season, and it's likely that conditions will be good following the event - what better way to para-wait for a spectacular flight, than to make the place we fly at more beautiful? As an added bonus, BAPA will be providing coffee and bagels to volunteers.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
