Hat Creek Solstice Fly-In June 20-22 Print  | E-mail

The BAPA Summer Solstice Fly-In will be at Hat Creek from Friday, June 20 - Sunday, June 22.  Flying is primarily the glass-offs on Friday and Saturday nights.  Hat Creek is famous for its scenic and smooth evening glass-offs.  Paragliders usually launch later than 5:00 p.m. and sometimes fly until dark, depending on conditions.

For more information on Hat Creek including location and flying conditions, please go to -http://hatcreek.info/Site%20Info-Recommended%20Pilot%20Skills.htm

Please note that the information on the page above is somewhat geared toward hgs - paragliders generally do not fly during the middle of the day because of the high winds.  Good, strong launch and landing skills are very important at Hat Creek.  It can be windy at launch and very still in the LZ (so you come in fast).  Hat Creek is a lovely place - as you fly, you look out at Lassen, Burney Mountain and Mt. Shasta in the distance.

Please save the dates for the Hat Creek fly-in.  I will send out more details as we get closer to the dates including information on camping and other logistics.

BAPA Thermal Clinic 5/31-6/1 Print  | E-mail

Hello BAPA Members.  I wrote about the annual BAPA Thermal Clinic recently in my message regarding upcoming events and activities.

Here is the information again -

The annual BAPA Thermal Clinic will be held at Dunlap or Potato Hill on May 31 - June 1.  This clinic is geared toward newer intermediate pilots who would like to expand their knowledge of thermal flying.  We ask that you have a minimum of 20 hours of airtime, 50 flights, 30 flying days and good launch and landing skills.  When you sign up, please let us know how many thermal hours you have, how many total airtime hours, total flights and total flying days.  This clinic is not for advanced pilots.  The clinic is limited to eight attendees.  BAPA asks that you contribute $10 toward dinner on Saturday night.  Tom Moock leads the clinic and Ann Sasaki and Kurt Niznik will assist with logistics.  If you would like to sign up for the clinic, please contact Ann at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

We have two or three spots left in the clinic.  If you have the appropriate flying experience and are interested in signing up, please contact me and let me know how many total airtime hours, total flight and total flying days you have.

Thanks!

Dunlap fly-in a success! Print  | E-mail
To all who came out to Dunlap this weekend (we counted 30 pilots!), a big thank you for participating in a great event. The weather gave us some great flying for two days and everyone's presence and cooperation helped make it a fun event.

A big thanks to Susan Kent for organizing and executing a fun, supportive and safe XC Co-op event with help from Tom Moock.
Also, the following folks pitched in and helped with our Saturday night dinner: Ann Sasaki, Bob and Amy Posey, James and Lorie Smythe, Chip Sheppard, Kim Galvin, Susan Kent, Andy Mutz, Celia Pender, Dan Retz, Praveen Murthy, Kevin Hester and Mike Walker. Great work guys! Please take the time to thank them when you see them next.

Our next BAPA fly-ins will be in June; June 7th and 8th for another round of the XC Coop at Potato, and June 20th-22nd for some sweet solstice glass-offs at Hat Creek rim.

More on those later.

Lift,

-Kurt

BAPA Mtg Weds May 7 in Daly City Print  | E-mail
Hello BAPA Members.  The next bi-monthly BAPA meeting will be held this Wednesday, May 7 at Marie Callender's in Daly City.  (For Directions, please go to Meetings .)

The Social Half Hour starts at 6:30 p.m. - please come to eat and socialize.  We can order off the full menu and get separate checks - there are lots of sandwiches and salads, etc.  The room is larger and more comfortable than our old pizza place.

The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. After the meeting Susan Kent, Kevin Hester and Joe Azure will give a presentation on their great XC trip in Chile last winter.  Kevin and Joe went for the first week geared toward less experienced pilots.  Susan stayed two weeks - the second week was for pilots who had more XC experience.  All three thought the trip was great and had really nice flying.

Hope you can make the meeting!

Stolen Gear: Yellow/Red U-Turn Emotion (S) Print  | E-mail
Last night, someone broke into my car (smashed a window) and stole my radios, GPS Navigator and a New U-Turn Emotion.  It is a small community, so perhaps this might show up somewhere, the wing that is.  If anyone notes a wing being sold or if one shows up at one of our local sites, please do what you can to call police and or recover it.

The paraglider is a Small Emotion, Red Leading Edge with Yellow Rear.

Up is Good !
