I hope you are all enjoying the great spring flying we've been having at the coast and in the mountains - local and more distant. It seems like this year is off to a good start.
We have a lot of fun and informative BAPA events and activities coming up. I wanted to give you a quick run down -
Next weekend on April 19-20, Tom Moock has announced a work party at Dunlap to work on the launch improvements that have been made this spring. Please contact Tom (

) if you can attend to work and then fly.
On Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m., Bob Drury, the editor of Cross Country magazine (an international paragliding and hanggliding magazine) will be presenting a slide show on his vol bivouac adventures in the Himalayas. Go to http://www.sfbapa.org/pg/bob_drury_talk.html to pay for admission ($10 for BAPA members, $20 for non-members). BAPA will provide dinner for all attendees. The presentation will be at Adobe Systems in San Francisco.
The following weekend, April 26-27, there is a BAPA fly-in and the first XC Co-op event at Dunlap. All are welcome to free fly or participate in the Co-op and partake of a group dinner with BAPA providing the main course. If you plan to fly in the Co-op (a fun XC effort) please contact Susan Kent (

). Also, please let Kurt and me (

) know if you are coming so we'll count you in for the main dish at Saturday dinner. This should be a fun combination of free flying and XC practice. Dunlap is a P3 site but P2s can be sponsored by an instructor or USHPA Observer.
On May 3-4, Gene Pfeiffer is organizing the annual Anderson Flat fly-in. You can stay at Gene's cabin (either camping on his property or staying in the house) or camp at the Anderson Flat LZ. Please contact Gene if you plan to come (

). There will be a group potluck dinner at Gene's cabin on Saturday night. Anderson Flat is close to Yosemite and can be lovely in the spring with wildflowers in the LZ, snow on the mountains in the distance and good flying.
The next BAPA meeting is on Wednesday, May 7 at Marie Callendar's in Daly City. (See www.sfbapa.org under "Meetings" for directions). I believe the entertainment will be a slide show by Susan Kent and Kevin Hester on a very fun XC trip in Chile last winter geared toward newer pilots just starting XC and in a second week toward more advanced pilots.
On Saturday, May 24 - Monday, May 26 is the Woodrat Starthistle fly-in - a perennially popular event held at Woodrat Mountain in Jacksonville, Oregon. See http://www.rvhpa.net/
The annual BAPA Thermal Clinic will be held at Dunlap or Potato Hill on May 31 - June 1. This clinic is geared toward newer intermediate pilots who would like to expand their knowledge of thermal flying. We ask that you have a minimum of 20 hours of airtime, 50 flights, 30 flying days and good launch and landing skills. When you sign up, please let us know how many thermal hours you have, how many total airtime hours, total flights and total flying days. This clinic is not for advanced pilots. There is room for eight attendees at this two-day clinic. BAPA asks that you contribute $10 toward dinner on Saturday night. Tom Moock leads the clinic and Ann Sasaki and Kurt Niznik will assist with logistics. If you would like to sign up for the clinic, please contact Ann at

On June 7-8, the second BAPA fly-in and XC Co-op will be held at Potato Hill. More details to come.
On June 20-22, there will be a BAPA Summer Solstice fly-in at Hat Creek. Hat Creek is a beautiful and soulful site known for its great glass-offs. More details to come.
That's it for now. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Ann Sasaki BAPA Activities Co-Director
P.S. Jug asked me to mention one more upcoming event - the May XC League will be on May 17-18. The location is yet to be determined.
Maybe we should have a contest to see who can attend the largest number of upcoming events that I've listed yesterday and today.
Thanks for your participation and enthusiasm!
