Dunlap Directions Print  | E-mail

These directions are provided as reference only. In order to fly the Dunlap valley you must join the Dunlap Flight Club, administered by Russ and Connie Locke. Please refer to the Dunlap Flight Club Rules for more information. When joining the club they will gladly provide a site introduction and review the LZ and launch areas with you. The Dunlap valley is a very sensitive site; it is extremely important that you know and follow the rules and do NOT land on any property that is not free-flight-friendly. Connie can map the entire valley for you (and hopefully we'll eventually have such a map available here).

Directions to Fresno:
  • From the Bay Area, take your favorite route to Highway 152 E (Hwy 1, 101 or 5 south to 152)
  • 99S to Fresno

Directions to Hume Lake Ranger Station at the mouth of the Dunlap valley from Highway 152:

  • Two miles south of Hwy 180E (on 99S), take the Jensen Avenue exit and turn LEFT on Jensen (at Shell/Subway), towards Sanger
  • Drive 12 miles and turn LEFT onto Academy Avenue - a T junction
  • Drive 1.9 miles and turn RIGHT onto Kings Canyon/Hwy 180 (at the ARCO Mini Mart)
  • Drive 5.8 miles and turn LEFT onto Kings Canyon/Hwy 180 (at the fruit stand)
  • Drive 17.3 miles and you will see the Ranger Station on your left.

Directions to Millwood Road turnoff to launch and camping area from Hume Lake Ranger Station:

  • Continue 10 miles on Hwy 180, notice the brown information sign for the McKenzie Helipad and Armenian Church Camp - that's your turn
  • Swing right into the pullout so you can make the hairpin LEFT onto Millwood Road

Directions to rough camping area from Millwood Road/Hwy 180 intersection

  • Drive up the hill on Millwood Road, after Hwy 180
  • Turn RIGHT at brown informational sign toward Millwood Camp
  • Drive 0.2 miles (just past the water trough on the left) and turn RIGHT into the pullout
  • (Note that if you continue on approximately 4 miles there is a more improved campground)

Directions to Launch from Millwood Road/Hwy 180 intersection

  • Drive up the hill on Millwood Road, after Hwy 180 (or turn right onto Millwood, if coming from the campsite)
  • Follow brown informational signs toward Delilah Lookout
  • Notice the fenced corral on your left with many dead cars nearby
  • Drive 1 mile past cattle guard and turn LEFT at the dirt road (if you miss the first dirt road you can turn at the second one)
  • Park near the port-a-potty/treehouse

Directions to LZ road from Hume Lake Ranger Station: NEEDED (does anyone have these?).

Although the launch is appropriate for P2 pilots under instruction, the LZs are currently very challenging, P3 landings. Connie is working on securing a P2-friendly LZ in the valley.

There is a handy map of the general area at Sierra Gateway Map - Squaw Valley Area.

Other important directions: right now (May 2005) there is a fabulous waterfall along Highway 180. It's at 3750' elevation (there are elevation signs all along Hwy 180 along this portion, since it is consistently climbing), between Cat Haven and Snowline Lodge. Coming from the Ranger Station there is a big, paved pull-out on the right, but it's just before you can actually see the waterfall. Coming from launch/camp, there is a small, gravel pull-out on the right, just as you get your first glimpse of the big rocks of the waterfall.
